Over 4,000 Finnish citizens live in Estonia, of which the majority reside in Tallinn and its surrounding areas. Most of these have come here to work or run their own businesses, and many own summer houses in Estonia, favouring the waterfronts of Saaremaa and Western Estonia in particular. The largest numbers of Finnish students are at Tartu University, where almost 300 study each year. In Tallinn, there are little over 100 Finnish students.
The Finns, and their customs, are actively represented in Estonia by a number of organisations and associations with which the embassy works in partnership, including the Finnish Institute and the Finnish business community.
Finnish culture has a definite place in Estonian cultural life. In almost any given week, you will encounter Finnish culture in its different forms in any number of places around Estonia, be it in exhibitions, concerts, theatre or other cultural events. Interest in Finland can also be seen in the people's Finnish language skills and studies.
